I run Windows, how do I connect to my iPhone?

From windows you will need to go to windows explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer, if in doubt double click on "My Computer" and it should take you to windows explorer), in the path field at the top of the window were it has the path to the displayed folder you should put the URL displayed on the opening screen in the DataCase applicaiton that starts with "ftp://" and press enter. This should let you browse your files and upload/download as expected.

I'm using Mac OS X Leoperd (10.5) how do I connect to my iPhone?

From a Mac just connect the iPhone to a network you can access from your Mac and launch DataCase and you should see your iPhone appear in the list of shared computers. If you don't see you phone listed in this list go to Finder and select go->network from the top menu and find your phone in that list.

I'm using Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) or older how do I connect to my iPhone?

From the Finder select go->network from the top menu. Find your phone in the list of shared computers and click on it.

Will people be able to see my files when my phone is in my pocket?

No. There is never any file server running when you are not running DataCase so no-one will be able to access your files.

I have some files that I don't want to share, does DataCase let me control who gets access to my files?

Yes DataCase has a rich set of configurable access controls that you can set by volume. We allow you to set different permissions on volumes. So there are a few things you can do. You can set a volume to require you to explicitly allow access each time a remote user wants to access a volume (this is what controls whether or not you get that popup asking if you want to allow a connect). You can set a volume hidden (a hidden volume can not be seen or accessed remotely). You can set a volume readable (if a volume is readable then remote users can copy files off the iPhone). You can set a volume writable (this allows remote users to upload files, and to modify or delete files). Finally you can set a volume to be browsable (this allows remote users to see what files exist on the volume).

For example, the Drop Box is a volume we create by default that is configured to require an access check (the popup verification), and that is set to be writable, but not readable or browsable. The end result is that people can copy files to the drop box, but they can not modify them remotely, and they can't see what else is in there.

If you want to play around with volume permissions you can edit permissions on a volume, or add new volumes by clicking edit on the volume list in the UI.

I'm having trouble playing videos or audio files with spaces in their names.

This is probably a bug that we have that is triggered by spaces in file names. We had that fixed but I think we mistakenly got it back in in a later beta. A fix is going out soon for that and you'll have it as soon as Apple finishes processing the update (all updates are free of course). In the mean time if you rename the file to not include spaces that should fix it. I do apologize for the trouble. If this doesn't sound like its what's causing it, let us know and we'll track down the issue.

What is the Drop Box?

Why can't I see the files in the Drop Box from my computer?

I get an error when I try to open the Drop Box.

The Drop Box is a specially configured volume to behave exactly in this way (you can change its settings in the volume editor by clicking edit on the volume list in the DataCase UI and then selecting "Drop Box"). The Drop Box is configured specifically to allow people to upload files but not to be able to see files and not to be able to edit or delete anything in the volume. This is a security feature. By default we've created two volumes. The Drop Box is one, and the other is Shared Files. Shared Files will work more along the lines that you might expect, you should be able to upload and browse files remotely. If you'd like to change the way the Drop Box works you simply need to go to the volume editor, select Drop Box and enable browsing and reading from this volume.

My computer keeps asking me for a username and password when I try to connect to DataCase, what username and password should I use?

My computer was trying to log on as Guest so I tried to change it to my normal account and it says the account is unknown what am I doing wrong?

Do you support usernames and passwords?

We don't use usernames to log into DataCase. We considered it, and we may add it as an advanced option in the future, but we found it just too cumbersome to manage users when trying to share files (too many "hold on let me create an account for you" moments). And the small space available for the interface makes it even more troubling. Instead we think we've working out a better way. To log in log in as guest and access controls are, and your privacy is protected by a set of volume permission settings.

We allow you to set different permissions on volumes. So there are a few things you can do. You can set a volume to require you to explicitly allow access each time a remote user wants to access a volume (this is what controls whether or not you get that popup asking if you want to allow a connect). I'm running OS X Tiger (10.4) and sometimes when I try to reconnect to DataCase I get an error telling me that the server could not be found. What is going on?

This happens to some people using OSX 10.4. It seems to be caused by a bug in Apple's AFP (apple file sharing) client that was fixed in 10.5. It happens when you shutdown a server while the client is still connected to it. Now if you shut it down while a volume is mounted this will cause it, but if you have a finder window open to the list of volumes then its still connected and this might trigger it as well. We're still not sure why this bug is only triggered on some 10.4 machines. It happens with all AFP servers where if you shutdown the server while its still running the bug seems to happen (even if its not a DataCase server). Try rebooting and making sure you're disconnected before you exit datacase. We do have a work around for this Apple bug that we will be making available in a free update soon.

Why can't I just copy files to DataCase over the USB cable?

Unfortunately Apple has expressly forbidden all app developers from accessing the USB from our app. I think they are worried about someone using it to unlock the iPhone easier (as if anyone was having trouble doing this at this stage). We'd love to support this feature, but unfortunately with Apple threatening to pull any app that does this from iTunes we can't support this feature at this time.

Some Unicode characters (non-normalized characters) are not displaying correctly inside DataCase.

We're aware of these issues (as of last night at least). We're currently working on a fix and when it is available it will of course be a free update.

I'm having trouble using a third party FTP client with DataCase.

This is a known issue and a fix will be available later this week in a free update.

DataCase Crashes when I touch "Allow" on connect.

I can't transfer files because I get the message "error opening data fork (file busy or I/O error)".

I was able to view my files fine, but now they all appear as blank.

This seems to happen due to a bug in Apple's OS upgrade routines. It can happen when you upgrade from 2.0 to 2.0.1 or when you upgrade from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2. after installing the application. If you delete and reinstall the application, it should start working. For more information on this bug, check here

It describes a crash bug that happens, but also seems to be the root of this problem as well.

How do I view my iWork files?

iWorks files are supported for DataCase 1.1 and newer. To view them in DataCase simply zip them (control click on the file, press archive) and name them with the extension as follows:
Pages Documents: filename.pages.zip
Numbers: filename.numbers.zip
Keynote: filename.keynote.zip

I just upgraded DataCase and I'm getting an error message about ports being between 1024 and 65535. Now what?

If after upgrading to DataCase 1.1, you are getting an error message reporting "Warning: afp, http, ftp, were not started because the port must be between 1024 and 65535." we believe this is because the settings were not initialized correctly. To correct this error, simply go into the settings.app program on your device (where you configure other options of the device), then find the DataCase item at the bottom of the list and tap on it. Tap on the "advanced" item, and then exit the app. This should initialize the settings so that DataCase initializes properly.
